Gerald Hill: Being a Fan and Your Best Self – Voice Actor Spotlight

Daniel Caouette here, one of the folks behind the curtain here at LearnVoiceActing.com. In preparation for the upcoming VOAtlanta 2025 conference running March 20th to March 23rd 2025, LearnVoiceActing.com was proud to sponsor a full ride scholarship to VOAtlanta – we’re talking conference ticket, airfare, and hotel accommodations. It was up to NAVA to pick someone that deserved this scholarship, and while they had their work cut out for them, they put in the effort to find the right person for the scholarship.

Gerald Hill was selected for our scholarship to VOAtlanta 2025, and I had the privilege of speaking with him and learning more about who he is as a voice actor and creator. After talking with Gerald, I can confidently say that the folks at the National Association of Voice Actors picked one of the most incredible and genuine people I have ever met in my voice acting career.

Gerald Hill isn’t your everyday voice actor. He’s a man who has reinvented himself—transitioning from IT by day and comic book artistry by night to embracing his most creative and passionate pursuits including art, acting, cosplay, and of course, his family. In our wide-ranging conversation, Gerald’s genuine personality and his relentless pursuit of creative fulfillment shone through. From his early career challenges to his current mantra for success, his story is a blueprint for anyone daring to follow their passion.

From IT and Comics to the World of Voice Acting

Before diving into voice acting, Gerald’s days were split between a structured IT career and the imaginative realm of comic book art. He published his first comic book and was working on another while maintaining a steady job in IT. Yet beneath the surface, there was a growing urge to explore a different creative outlet—a desire to bring characters to life in a new way.

When health challenges struck and forced him on leave, Gerald reached a turning point. “Fear held me back for a long time,” he admitted. The combination of a serious personal challenge and the timely arrival of remote opportunities allowed him to finally invest in the classes he’d been eyeing. With the unwavering support of his wife and children, and a newfound determination, he began sending out auditions. This leap wasn’t just about changing careers—it was about embracing a lifelong passion that he’d nurtured quietly on the side.

The Art of Finding Work Through Genuine Connections

One of the most compelling aspects of Gerald’s approach to voice acting is his focus on building authentic relationships. Rather than chasing every opportunity with a frantic “hustle” mentality, he treats each connection as a chance to share his passion for the project. “I’m a fan first,” he says, emphasizing that his admiration for the work of clients and creators naturally paves the way for collaborations.

Gerald is refreshingly organic when he makes contact with project creators. While Gerald said he can be reserved when discussing most day-to-day topics, he is very passionate about the creative pursuits and projects he enjoys. That’s what drives him to reach out- his appreciation for the project, not a cold desire to find work. When Gerald finds a project he truly appreciates, he reaches out. It’s never about getting a job for him; it’s about sharing in the passion behind a project. If that project just so happens to need a voice actor, Gerald’s emotional attachment for the project makes him the perfect person to hire. But even when a project isn’t looking for his skills, he’s all about making that genuine connection. He is a fan, and he wants to let creators know that their hard work is being appreciated by their greater community.

A Mindset for Long-Term Success

At the heart of Gerald’s journey is a mantra that has guided him through the ups and downs of the industry:

  • This Job is a Marathon, Not a Sprint:
Success in voice acting doesn’t come overnight. Gerald underscores the importance of patience and steady progress, reminding aspiring actors that building a solid foundation is key to long-term achievements.
  • It’s About the Acting, Not Just the Voice:
Even more proof of Gerald Hill’s skill as a voice actor was his advice on acting. Where many voice actors (especially early on) get tied up focusing on how a character sounds, Gerald highlighted how his approach to understanding the character inside and out as an actor first takes him to places that focusing on the voice alone cannot. “I’m not myself,” Gerald explained when talking about performing his characters. When stepping into the character’s shoes, he lets the character take over and his performance follows.
  • Be the Best Version of Yourself:
In an industry where everyone has a unique voice, Gerald believes authenticity is the ultimate differentiator. Instead of mimicking others or fitting into a predefined mold, he encourages voice actors to embrace their individuality. “Your voice is your fingerprint,” he explains, illustrating that true success comes from being genuine and confident in your own skin.
  • Love What You Love and Get Out of Your Own Way:
Perhaps his most resonant piece of advice, this mantra is a call to follow your passion relentlessly. Gerald’s advice is simple: trust your instincts, believe in your craft, and don’t let fear or self-doubt hold you back.

Navigating the Industry with a Creative Spirit

Gerald’s journey is also a story about overcoming internal doubts and stepping out of his comfort zone. Initially a reserved personality online, he found that when it came to discussing subjects he’s passionate about—be it video games, animation, or his favorite characters—he could truly shine. This passion has not only enriched his performances but also made him a beloved figure among his clients and peers.

His participation in community events like VO Atlanta further underscores his commitment to growth and networking. For him, these events are more than just industry gatherings—they’re opportunities to meet friends, share experiences, and continue learning. Whether it’s the excitement of catching up with old friends or the thrill of meeting new talent, Gerald’s presence in these communities exemplifies the collaborative spirit that defines modern voice acting.

What’s Next and How to Find Gerald Hill

“I’ve got some exciting things coming this year,” Gerald teased as we closed up our conversation. He can’t talk about most of it (you know how NDAs can be), but based on the twinkle in his eye, I’m eagerly watching for his announcements.

If you want to see what Gerald is up to across all of his creative pursuits, as well as photos of his parrot, his dog, and the rest of his household zoo, be sure to follow him through his Twitter/X and Instagram accounts.
